The Return of Guns N´ Roses...

...or at least of two of its original members, plus longtime frontman Axl Rose. I remember back in 2008, when Chinese Democracy finally saw the light of day, how excited I was. I must have heard the thing a million times. I was fine with Axl being the only original member left in the band. Then, for some reason, I asked myself: "Why can´t at least Slash and Duff be around?". I stopped believing what I told myself for so many years: that GN´R could actually be GN´R without at least three original members. Even though I respected what the new lineup of the group was doing and acknowledged the awesome musicians it had had over the years (Robin Finck, Buckethead, Bumblefoot. Monster guitarists), I secretly longed for a reunion, or at least the return of a couple of its original musicians. 

Be careful what you wish for, they say. This week, after months of endless speculation, it was confirmed that Guns N´ Roses will play Coachella with Slash and Duff back in the picture. Am I happy? Hell yeah!!! Been waiting for the gang to get back together and do something since 1996. Will I miss Bumblefoot, Tommy Stinson, DJ Ashba? Absolutely not (This is the part in which you, Chinese Democracy era fans, can start cursing at me...or turn on your TV and watch Ren & Stimpy). I won´t miss them because I -except for a very brief period of time- never saw them as really being "gunners". I grew up with the Guns N´Roses 87-93 lineup, and when all of them but one (two, counting the always loyal Dizzy Reed) left, I thought that was it and the band should have ended. Then, Axl came back with a bunch of new guys, which was extremely hard for me to accept. Again, realizing after a while they were great musicians, they just were not my GN´R. 

Slash, Duff, and Izzy became so iconic in so many ways, that it was nearly impossible for me to accept the band could carry on without ´em. I, however, looked the other way and believed GN´R was still GN´R. I´ve talked about this with many fellow fans. Some have agreed, some haven´t and have hated me. Oh, well, I´d rather be hated for speaking my mind, than loved for saying what people want to hear. One thing has always annoyed me: the fact that some modern day GN´R fans hate that a semi-reunion is happening, but they still sing the Appetite for Destruction songs at the top of their lungs. They hate the old band members, but love their music. How does that work exactly? Anyway, as of today, only Slash and Duff have been confirmed from the original five. Would love to see Izzy and Steven, but I doubt it´ll happen, at least not on a full-time basis. I won´t complain, three out of five is pretty good. I´ve read some people bitching because is not the original lineup. It will probably happen at some point. Maybe Frank Ferrer (whom, by the way, I have never enjoyed as a drummer) and Richard Fortus will quit one day, opening the door for the return of Adler and Izzy. (Don´t forget about Matt Sorum and the underrated Gilby Clarke) Who knows. All I know is old Guns fans have to stop moaning and whining about the lineup not being the Appetite guys. I, for one, will enjoy everything they will offer, even if it´s at least a couple of shows, even though what I want is a full-scale tour, new music, videos, reissues. I want it all. Guess we´ll have to wait and see. 

Axl y Slash Se Reconcilian: Leyendo Entre Líneas

Hace poco más de una semana llegó la noticia que muchos , incluido yo, jamás pensamos oír: Axl y Slash vuelven a hablar tras casi dos décadas sin hacerlo. Así lo anunció el mismo Slash en entrevista con un medio sueco. Ante la pregunta del periodista sobre el acercamiento entre ambos músicos, el guitarrista contestó: “Creo que nos demoramos mucho. Es bueno dejar de lado toda esa negatividad”. Cuando el entrevistador tocó el tema de una posible reunión de la formación original de Guns N´ Roses, Slash cambió el tema de inmediato.

Los rumores no se hicieron esperan. Inmediatamente diferentes redes sociales, medios de comunicación y blogs se inundaron con todo tipo de especulaciones y las típicas noticias infundadas acerca de la tan ansiada reunión. Incluso se llegó a informar que el grupo tocaría en el festival Soundwave de Australia en enero de 2016, lo cual –lamentablemente- quedó desmentido por la misma cabeza de dicho evento. En medio de tanta habladuría, ¿Qué les parece si leemos entre las líneas de la noticia en cuestión?

Si bien la información sobre la reconciliación llegó hace poco, dicen diversas personas con fuentes cercanas a los integrantes de la banda que Axl y Slash limaron asperezas hace casi cerca de un año. En silencio. Por otra parte, esas mismas personas afirman que algo está sucediendo tras bambalinas en cuanto a una posible reunión de la alineación original de Guns N´ Roses. ¿Qué han dicho los exintegrantes del grupo? Absolutamente nada. Lo cual me pone a pensar: si todo fuera mentira, estoy seguro de que alguien, sobre todo Axl, hubiera dicho algo al respecto. El periodista musical Eddie Trunk comentó que intentó conseguir una entrevista con Slash para aclarar la situación, pero según su mánager: él no quiere hablar del tema en este momento. Es un silencio sospechoso, sin duda. Ni siquiera Steven Adler (baterista original de GN´R) –siempre tan interesado en tocar el tema- ha dicho una sola palabra, al igual que Duff McKagan (bajista).

¿Creo que algún día el grupo de reunirá? Sí. Siempre lo he creído. ¿Cuándo creo que va a pasar? No sé, tal vez en unos años. Si usted sabe algo de la historia de Guns N´ Roses, entonces sabe que nada con ellos es fácil. Pienso que antes de que algo suceda, todos los involucrados del grupo tendrían que tener largas conversaciones e incluso ayuda profesional y psicológica, así como tuvieron que hacer los integrantes de Blur para poder grabar su nuevo disco sin asesinarse en el intento, o como hizo Metallica para no terminar de caerse a pedazos en las épocas de St. Anger. Piensen también la cantidad de abogados que estarían metidos en el asunto. 

Nada fácil será. Pero si Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Police –por nombrar apenas algunos casos- pudieron dejar sus diferencias atrás y tocar juntos de nuevo, estoy seguro de que Axl, Slash, Izzy, Steven y Duff pueden hacerlo también. A pesar de que creo que la reunión va a tomar tiempo, también creo que este momento es el perfecto para que pase. ¿por qué? Porque la formación actual de la agrupación está “cojeando”, en crisis, si se quiere. Dos de sus guitarristas –DJ Ashba y Bumblefoot- anunciaron su salida del grupo recientemente. Asimismo, el bajista Tommy Stinson parece estar más interesado en estar con The Replacements y en hacer cosas como solista que en trabajar con GN´R. Lo anterior deja un espacio para que Slash, Izzy (o Gilby) y Duff vuelvan al grupo. Duff, a propósito, reemplazo brevemente a Stinson en el paso por Suramérica de la banda hace poco. La animosidad entre Axl y Slash era lo que detenía una reunión. Ahora que por fin decidieron actuar como adultos y dejar atrás sus diferencias, no veo nada que la detenga.
